Townsville a popular backpacker destination, Accommodation and Attractions for backpackers.
Townsville, is a coastal city which has a population of around 180,000 people, it is on the coast and and brags about having 315 days of sunshine a year. It is a great spot for backpackers and visitors wanting a taste of outback Australia while staying near the coast. It offers a good choice of restaurants & bars but also has a relaxing feel about, it is a popular destination with backpackers exploring the east coast, it is the largest town between the Sunshine Coast and Cairns its size and pace are a lot slower than those of Brisbane and Cairns . It retains the vibe of a coastal town with a friendly, welcoming atmosphere whilst being big on things to do. Whilst it is a regional centre for the north eastern region of Queensland its also big on tourism and if you are visiting you will find lots of options for hanging out and relaxing in the city.
This area provides a range of accommodation options whatever your budget, backpackers have many hostels to choose from, which are great places to get inside tips on the best tours and activities.
Townsville is further from the reef than the Cairns but is close to the well known Yongala Wreck, for those people who enjoy Diving. I have been out and dived this wreck and the amount of fish around this wreck is amazing, it is one of Australia's top dive sites, the Yongala was a luxury passenger ship sunk in a cyclone on 23rd March 1911. The popularity of this area is because of it's access Magnetic Island, where snorkelling and diving is an ideal past time. And of course it is the wonderful tropical weather that draws hoards of tourists, with warm conditions most of the time, and humidity and tropical storms abundant during the Summer months, but they are only brief.
