Mission Beach, is located between the North Queensland cities of Cairns and Townsville, it is close to the Great Barrier Reef. The beautiful Dunk Island, Bedarra Island are about 5km away from the shoreline. This is a holiday destination where rainforest meet the Great Barrier Reef, it is best known for its, pristine sandy beaches, rainforest, the cassowary bird, and the Great Barrier Reef, is only a short boat trip away. The town has a population around 5000 and this small stretch of coast is fast becoming a major backpacker destination. There are several small settlements dotted along the 14 kilometres. The township is made up of of Bingil Bay, Wongaling Beach and South Mission. The town has much to offer backpackers and budget travellers. There are many activities these include skydiving, white water rafting, sea kayaking, SCUBA diving, snorkelling, rainforests and secluded beaches. The area boasts many restaurants offering a wide range of eating places some are fully licensed, others are BYO. South Mission Beach has glorious views across to Dunk Island, Bedarra, the Family Group and the largest National Park Island in Australia, Hinchinbrook Island. Enjoy lunch at a resort on O’Shanter Point or choose from a variety of water sports at the beach. Kayak to Dunk Island, fish from the beach or hire a boat to explore the beaches. Wongaling Beach is the closest point to Dunk Island and enjoys spectacular views. Launch your boat directly off the beach or catch the water taxi to Dunk Island. Alternatively, go shopping at the Wongaling shopping centre or goto one of the beachfront bars. Bingil Bay, is the last beach in the area and has free barbeques at the waters edge, you can also walk to the top of Bicton Hill for good senic views of the Barnard Islands and over to Dunk and Hinchinbrook.
