Is transport (eg car) necessary for farm jobs?

It seems like most farm employers I contacted all told me to get a car first.

All the farmers I worked for wanted me to have a car. When I stayed at the working backpacker hostels they, or the farmers transported us to the farms so not having a car wasn't an issue when staying at the working backpacker hostels.
