Machu Picchu in Peru, South America, was recently voted one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World and also is a Top Ten destination for tourists, rating higher than the Great Wall of China.
This is one of the reasons so many are hitting the road to Peru.
Of course, the country of Peru in South America has a lot more to offer than only Machu Picchu, such as the fabulous Upper Amazon River jungle basin, the coastal pre-Inca archaeological sites, the tropical beaches, superb mountain climbing, etc.
But closer to your heart, or pocketbook, travel in Peru is attractive because of the large number of hostels catering to backpackers. Backpackers are a familiar sight here and are widely welcomed.
Although it may not be possible to work your way around Peru as you might in Australia, it certainly will cost you much less to eat and sleep.
Even in the tourist areas, lodging can be had for under $7 USD a night. Away from the busy areas, it can be much less. A meal may cost as little as $1.50 USD.
And there are many areas where you can camp for a small fee, some providing a tent and mattress if needed.
For example, to take a look at what's available in just one major tourist area, Cusco, check out this site:
