Can we go directly at the farm?

Thanks a lot for sharing and supplying all the details of this places!
I was wondering if the farmers are always using backpackers/hostels to find their workforce, or if you get a chance to land a job if you ask directly at the farm?
Just for the people who are travelling by van like me!
