Backpacking Byron Bay Australia

About Backpacking Byron Bay.
Once Byron Bay was only a simple whaling station laterdiscovered by surfers. In the sixties the hippie culture movedin and now the place is swarmed with backpackers, tourists and celebrities wanting to experience the alternative town, which is now one of the hippest destinations on the East Coast. Despite thecoastal town’s reputation of being laid back and alternative,it is anything but boring and visitors have the time of theirlives in Byron Bay!

Byron Bay has that small town charm mixed with a cosmopolitan – yet alternative – lifestyle that attracts mainly young people from all over the world. There are no high-rise hotels here butplenty of km of unbroken sandy beaches and heaps of great surf waves to catch.

Backpacking Byron Bay; things to do.

The Cape Byron Lighthouse
A visit to lighthouse on the rocky Cape Byron - one of the most powerful in the southern hemisphere - is a must. The view is magnificent and on a good day you might even spot dolphins or whales. It is also a popular spot to greet the dawn.

Surfing
Byron Bay’s beaches face many different directions increasing the chance for a great surfing wave. But for those who still needto learn, Byron Bay is the perfect place to take surfing lessons with its often mellow waves.

Diving And Snorkeling
The sea around Byron Bay has an abundant marine life among the rock reefs. The Julian Rocks Aquatic Reserve and the underwater cave, the Cod Hole, offer great diving experiences. If you are not a certified diver yet, this is the place to complete your training.

Whale Watching
From May to July grandiose humpback whales pass Byron Bay on their journey to calving and breeding grounds further north. In September and October they come past Byron Bay again when theymigrate back to the Antarctic with their youngsters. Several companies organise.
